Adventure Careers

So what's an "adventure career" exactly? When many people think of an adventure career, they think of safari guides or hang-gliding instructors or rock climbing experts.

While those do certainly qualify for the “adventure” label, there are many more career possibilities that won’t have you jumping out of airplanes or moving the family to Kenya.

For example, your idea of adventure may be working on a cruise ship, or as a nature photographer, or a park ranger, or teaching and living overseas.

Other people would love to be a scuba diving instructor, or a dance choreographer, or a movie stunt person, or working for the Peace Corps. And still others are looking for a "job" at all, but would rather volunteer their time helping others and making a difference in the world.

Some adventure jobs are just for the summer, such as working as a rafting guide, adventure group facilitator, wilderness survival expert, working on a dude ranch, and more. There are many Alaska jobs available during the summer tourist season as well.

There are literally thousands of possibilities.

One thing's for sure, to most people, an adventure career is anything that doesn’t involve sitting in front of a computer screen in an office cubicle 40 hours per week, or working at a job that they find dull and uninspiring.

Doing the same thing, the same way, day after day, month after month. Too many of us have spent too much of our lives working in jobs like these, where we're basically trading time for money.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Almost everyone can remember the sense of adventure that they had as children, when a walk around the block could be a wondrous journey of discovery. Today’s adventure career seekers don’t accept the idea that they have to leave that sense of excitement and wonder back in childhood.

And so they look for jobs and careers that will challenge and energize them. Jobs that don’t dull their senses by endless monotony and repetition. Careers that have envious friends asking “How did you ever get a job like that?” or "I can't believe you make a living doing that" or “How can I get into that line of work?”

So whatever your motivation, don't think that an out-of-the-box career path is an impossible dream. And do be discouraged if well-meaning parents and other family members try to steer you down a more conventional career path.

After all, adventure careers aren't encouraged or promoted as realistic endeavors in most high schools or universities, so most people don't think a career that is stimulating and rewarding is even possible. And then there's the fact that a lot of people aren't comfortable with the idea that you might have a more exciting career than they do.

Many of them would love to have a little more adventure in their own work lives, and as they old saying goes: "Misery loves company."
