Broadcasting & Journalism Careers

Have you ever dreamed of being a TV news reporter, photojournalist, news anchor, radio disc jockey, or print journalist? If so, you might find that opportunities abound in the broadcasting industry.

What exactly is the broadcasting industry? It’s a huge collection of TV and radio stations and networks that create their own content, or aquire the rights to broadcast pre-recorded TV and radio programs. These programs consist primarily of music programs, local and national news, weather and sports, talk shows, movies, and of course advertisements (which is how these stations generate revenue).

You may think of broadcast careers as primarily working in front of the camera or microphone, as in a news anchor or disc jockey. But there are dozens of other broadcast careers that are behind the scenes - copy writers, videotape editors, makeup artists, camera operators, print reporters, and meteorologists, to name just a few.

News analysts, reporters, and correspondents gather information, prepare stories, and then broadcast that information to the world. Since local news programs typically run for a half-hour, there is a careful selection process as far as what to cover. Usually a few top national and international stores make the cut, along with important local stories, human interest stories, politics, and the local weather and sports.

If you’re interesting in pursuing a broadcast or journalism career, get the proper education. There are many broadcasting schools around the country, along with state and private universities that offer degrees in broadcast journalism.

Just be aware that these can be competitive career fields to break into, especially the positions in front of the camera. You may have to move to a smaller market to get your first job and experience, then move to a larger market later on.
