Want an exciting new career? You need to beleve!

Beliefs are powerful things.  What people believe  -- about the world, about themselves, about the people around them -- in a large part colors their perception, and their life as a whole.  Beliefs about a career change are no different. It's not enough to want a successful new career, or wish for one, you have to believe that a change of that magnitude is possible. It's been said that you become what you think about most of the time.

So how does one go about changing their beliefs, or at the very least, reinforcing their already existing beliefs?  First off, you need to examine your thought process, and the things that you tell yourself on a daily basis. If you tell yourself that a career change is going to be very difficult--or almost impossible--that belief will become a large hurdle for you to overcome in order to make your career transition a successful reality. Once self doubts creep into you're thinking, they can be as hard to get rid of as weeds in your back yard.

These are known as limiting beliefs. Unfortunately, by the time we're adults, most of us have a whole collection of limiting beliefs that have been drilled into us since childhood. We're not good at math, or we're lousy athletes, or we look a certain way, or we can't do this, we can't do that.  And at some point we begin to take these beliefs--accurate or not--as truths in our lives.

If, on the other hand, you tell yourself that you can do it, that achieving a new career is not only possible, but easily within reach if you take the right steps and work hard, then that will become your reality. These are positive beliefs.  Now this may sound simplistic (the power of positive thinking and all that) but what you believe really does have a powerful impact on the results in your life.

For example, for many years it was believed that no one would ever be able to run a four minute mile. This was thought to be a physical barrier that no human could overcome, and so almost all of the runners in the world at that time believed it to be a fact. But then a man named Roger Bannister came along. Roger happened to believe that a four minute mile was possible, and so he set that as a goal for himself.  And, after training hard, and with the help of several pacesetters, he did just that.

Once that limiting belief had been overcome, runners from around the world began running sub-four minute miles on a regular basis.

So you need to begin to believe in yourself. You need to believe that a new job or career is not only possible, but inevitable.  Your dream will be a reality. Others have overcome much larger obstacles in their lives just by believing, and changing the way they think.

One exercise you can to is actively examine your thoughts as you go about your daily activities. Most people run on a sort of autopilot, never really paying attention to what they're thinking about at any particular moment. And whenever you find yourself thinking something negative, write in down in a journal or spiral notebook.

Then, at the end of the day, or on the weekend, take a look at each one of those thoughts. Is there a limiting belief underpinning that thought?  If so, where did that belief come from, and how can you take steps to change it?  Remember, the first step in changing something is becoming aware that it's there in the first place.

Then, make an effort to replace any limiting thoughts or beliefs with thoughts that will lift and empower you. Give yourself a pep talk once a day, telling yourself that you're career dreams are possible. Just like in your diet, if you replace something that's unhealthy for you with something that is healthy, you'll be in better shape--both physically and mentally.

And don't be too hard on yourself for having limiting beliefs. Just be aware of them, and replace them with positive thoughts when you can. Remember, you become what you think about most of the time.
