Performing Arts Careers

Do you love to perform in front of others? Have your friends and family accused you of being a “ham?” Do you love the excitement of the crowd, and the applause, and “nailing” a performance?

If so, a career in the performing arts might be in your future.

It’s no secret that many people are drawn to the idea of working in the performing arts. Almost everyone has–-or knows someone who has–-dreamed of being an actor, or a musician, or a dancer. Talk about exciting, and the pay for top-level performers isn’t half bad either.

But the reality is that only a select few earn a full-time living as actors, dancers and musicians. Only a handful of performers become rich and famous. Many more work in these fields part-time, for little or no money, but they’re doing something they love, which is compensation in itself. And sometimes one if these part-time perfomers is “discovered,” and becomes rich and famous after all.

But there are dozens more careers that fall into the “performing arts” categories, and many of these supporting jobs are easier to find work and making a living at. Jobs like costume and hair design, stage manager, lighting technician, set decorator, camera operator, stunt performer, and many more.

Keep in mind that although these are challenging, rewarding careers, they also involve late nights and long hours. Your family life might suffer, so make sure those around you are on board if you decide to try a performing arts careers.

Another consideration is the fact that the performing arts is very competitive, and work can be sporadic to find, depending on where you live. Some workers in the arts spend more time working outside the industry than in it. And the pay can be fairly low, especially when you’re starting out.

But these drawbacks don’t keep millions of people from dreaming about a performing arts career. If you decide to persue your dream, be prepared to work hard, learn as much as you can from others, and most of all, don’t give up!
