Many people are finding that the rewards of
owning their own business are many -- and so are the challenges
If you've always dreamed of working for yourself, as many people have, then
owning your own business can be the ideal way to break away from the 9 to 5
employment grind.
Most entrepreneurs (myself included) and want-to-be entrepreneurs have a strong
desire for independence. The independence to make their own decisions, chart
their own course, and sink or swim as a result of those decisions. There's
nothing more gratifying than starting your own business and then watching it
grow over time into a successful, long-term venture. Sure, there are risks to
leaving the security of a job and starting out on your own, but the potential
rewards--both financially and spiritually--are well worth those risks.
Business opportunities can range from a small self-employed operation to a large
franchise employing dozens of people. It all depends on what your goals are, and
if you're comfortable with the idea of managing people and building a business
that will require you to delegate much of the responsibilities to other people.
For many, the work-at-home concept is ideal, allowing people to spend more time
with their children while still bringing in a monthly income.
With the advent of the Internet, fax machines, email, and other technologies,
it's more feasible than ever to find a career that allows you to work from home.
In fact, over 8500 home-based business start every day in the US, and the total
number is 20 million and growing. Even many large corporations have gone the
telecommuting route, thus saving them thousands of dollars in overhead costs,
and allowing their employees more flexibility in their lives.
Or perhaps you'd like to start your own retail store, restaurant, bar, hobby
shop or other bricks and mortar business. There are many options here, including
buying a franchise or an already established business. These types of businesses
can require a lot of time and money to set up, but the rewards can be great and
you can build a lasting business that you can pass on to your children when you
retire.
So get out your pad and pencil and begin brainstorming business ideas. What are
your hobbies or interests? What type of business would you find satisfying?
Entrepreneurs often work long hours, after all, so it's important to find
something that you'll enjoy doing for many years to come.
Then of course there are the financial aspects to consider. Many self-employed
or work-at-home businesses can be started for a few hundred dollars, while a
large franchise business require an investment of hundreds of thousands of
dollars. And keep in mind that most new businesses don't make money right away,
so make sure you have at least a year's worth of income saved before you quit
your day job.
